Always inspired by our natural surroundings within the Cataract Gorge Launceston, our team delivers exceptional service in a warm and intimate atmosphere.

Our culinary team draws inspiration from our heritage to provide a dining experience that reflects our journey from the kitchens of Europe to some of the best of modern-day Australian cuisine.

At The Gorge Restaurant our vision is simple. We aim to maintain a space where local, seasonal and sustainable produce is celebrated. Here we invite you to relax, enjoy and experience a true sense of place through the lense of our ever-evolving menu.

History

The building that now houses our restaurant was originally constructed in 1896 as a traditional tearoom, replacing the white refreshment tents that previously served picnickers travelling through the Cataract Gorge.

In the early 1970’s The Gorge Restaurant opened, replacing a tea room with a warm and inviting dining area adjoining the first licensed alfresco dining area in Australia. Since then, this luminary restaurant has been woven into Launceston’s rich and diverse history continuing to contribute to the city’s unique fabric.

Our Brands

In 2022 Matson Catering took over The Gorge Restaurant and Basin Café. Passionate to breathe new energy and life into these longstanding businesses the team from Matson’s are excited to bring their love for Tasmanian food and great service to a new home at one of the most famous locations in the state.

Established by in 1990, Matson Catering has developed a wonderful reputation for the quality of its food, the professionalism of its staff and the ability to exceed the expectations of guests. The brand has now grown to encompass seven statewide businesses in the hospitality industry with a team that is eager to highlight all the benefits of Tasmania, whether it be its people, its produce or its vast natural environment.
